Whistles of Niles Canyon Railway’s Steam Locomotive #3

Robert Dollar Co. #3, a 1927 Alco 2-6-2 tank engine, is actually pushing a set of excursion passenger cars westward from Sunol to Niles. This is at the west end of Brightside Yard where the crossing has two wigwags. The lead “cab car” is the Yosemite Valley Observation car. This wouldn’t be such a bad way to commute. 😉

Four Steam Locomotives! Niles Canyon Railway Steamfest II

Four tank engines running at the Niles Canyon Railway on September 20, 2009 as part of Steamfest II. The railroad runs between Fremont and Sunol, California, on the right-of-way of the former Southern Pacific. The locomotives featured are Quincy 2-6-2T No. 2, Robert Dollar 2-6-2T No. 3, Mason County Logging 2-6-2T No. 7 (from Roots of Motive Power) and Granite Rock 0-6-0T No. 10 (from the California State Railroad Musuem). The footage was filmed during special “Photographer’s Trains” that were run in the morning and afternoon, and aboard a special quadrupleheader that ran to Hearst.

Does the Steam Train still run to the Grand Canyon or is it only the Diesel Engines? Going in Aug to Williams?

I have been planning a fly drive to the West Coast of the USA and would love to take the steam train from Williams to the South rim of the Grand Canyon. I can only find info on the Diesel Engines that make this trip and none on the steam train but would love to take the steam train. Any answers or information would be welcomed.
