Today, many companies in aerospace and communications fields are engineering equipment to stop technology from malfunctioning due to extreme heat. Cutting edge devices designed for orbit, for instance, are often faced with the serious problem of thermal control. A piece of technology launched into space faces intensely hot temperatures. While in space, satellites and aerospace pieces need thermal management structures in order to function properly.

Why Do Satellites Need to be Cooled?

Typically, when a person thinks of space, vast expanses between stars and intensely cold temperatures often come to mind. This may cause people to wonder why earth orbiting satellites need thermal engineering to keep their parts from becoming hot. The answer is rather basic: the sun. A satellite is exposed to the sun for a large amount of the time it orbits the Earth. This proximity to the sun means a satellite requires methods to actively cool the heat conductive pieces of which it is made.

One reason a satellite is made from metal is because metal has a low conductivity. Conduction is the flow of heat through something when atoms rapidly vibrate against each other. Atoms exposed to heat become “excited” and move at an accelerated rate. Vibrations cause whatever is made from these atoms to become hot. Metals need more “excited” atoms than most to heat up, but once that takes place, it is likewise extremely difficult to cool. Satellites need thermal management systems to prevent destruction caused by heat.

How Are Satellites Cooled?

Telecommunication companies, aerospace firms, and military groups all launch satellites. And they all need thermal engineering services to design custom cooling systems for their products. While satellite thermal control and heat transfer technology is an evolving industry, there are a few standard pieces found within many heat conductivity systems. Heat pipes, loop heat pipes, and variable conductance heat pipes (VCHPs) are all staples in thermal management systems.

Heat pipes transfer heat more effectively and safely than many structures and are relatively simple. A heat pipe contains a liquid such as water, acetone, nitrogen, methanol, ammonia, or sodium. The pipe warms, and the liquid absorbs heat. The liquid then changes states and evaporates into a gas. The gas travels through the pipe to a cooling medium which draws heat from the gas and condenses it into liquid once more. Liquid inside the pipe is ready to absorb heat once more.

Extremely sensitive equipment is launched into space all the time. According to the United States Space Surveillance Network, there are approximately 3,000 satellites orbiting the Earth. These satellites are vital to many aspects of our lives. Meteorology, cell phones, guidance and military defense systems all rely on satellite technology. Proper thermal engineering is necessary to keep these birds in flight.

Marine Engineering

History of Marine Engineering

One of the most notable historical figures in Marine Engineering was Archimedes, who experimented with buoyancy; developed the water screw; and pre-industrial naval weapon systems. Pioneers in Marine engineering in Britain include William Froude, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was responsible for demonstrating the effectiveness of the screw propeller, amongst other notable achievements. The oldest surviving marine engine was designed by William Symington in 1788; original engines from the revolutionary ‘Turbinia’, which proved the superiority of steam-turbine power still survive. In America, the University of Michigan’s Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering can be tracked to an 1879 act of Congress, which authorised the U.S. Navy to assign a few officers to engineering training establishments around the country. Mortimer E. Cooley was the first lecturer in the department.[citation needed] India’s Marine Engineering & Research Institute can trace its origins to 1929.[citation needed]

Marine Engines

Marine engineering emerged as a discipline with the arrival of Marine Engines for propulsion, largely during the latter half of the 19th century. Early marine engineers were known as “stokers” as they ‘stoked’ the coal fires of steam engined ships more or less from the middle of the 19th to the middle of the 20th centuries; the term is still used affectionately by modern ship’s engineering staff to describe their role.

Modern mechanical propulsion systems generally consist of a motor or engine turning a propeller. Steam Engines were first used for this purpose, then Steam Turbines, but have mostly been replaced by two-stroke or four-stroke Diesel Engines, Outboard Motors, and with Gas Turbine engines on faster ships. Electric Motors have sometimes been used, especially on submarines. Nuclear reactors are sometimes employed to propel warships and icebreakers.[citation needed]

There are many variations of propeller systems, including twin, contra-rotating, controllable-pitch, and nozzle-style propellers. Smaller vessels tend to have a single propeller. Aircraft carriers use up to four propellers, supplemented with bow-thrusters and stern-thrusters. Power is transmitted from the engine to the propeller by way of a propeller shaft, which may or may not be connected to a gearbox.[citation needed]

Propeller shafts

Several type of propeller shafts exist with their own type of lubrication>. These types are:

Water lubricated propeller shaft

Oil-lubricated propeller shafts

Grease lubricated propeller shafts

Water-lubricated propeller shafts are the types which are most maintenance-free and durable. A small disadvantage is that when the bearings become old, they become less efficient. Oil-lubricated propeller shafts as well as grease-lubricated propeller shafts leak some oil, thus being less environmentally-friendly. In some countries, the grease-lubricated variant is herefore already banned. Oil and grease lubricated variants also require more maintenance, and the grease variant also needs to be manually or electronically corrected every few hours of boating (the “grease pot” then needs to be screwed up one notch). The benefits of the oil and grease variants is that they are more efficient.

Adding cathodic protection

Cathodic protection blocks need to be added to reduce the effects of corrosion unto a ship.

How On Line Flight Simulator Games Can Introduce Your Kids to Engineering, Design, & Architecture

I didn’t realize the potential of my on line flight simulator game to expand my children’s horizons until I found my second child tinkering around with it one day. He was already deep into designing his own plane when I came along and excited about what else he was going to do. “Hey, look Dad. You can make your own plane. And you can design your own airport, which is what I want to do after this”.

When my eldest child heard you could design your own stuff in the on line flight simulator game he became interested. He does not like too many rules, likes to try things his way. So the opportunity to do his own thing got him interested in the game. (I only have boys but I am sure the same applies equally to girls).

So there they were, tinkering around with my on line flight simulator game, working on aircraft design, airport architecture, and planning to moving on to some engineering in the systems and controls. If I had wanted to talk to them about design or engineering or architecture they might have listened but only from a sense of duty. But now they were engaged in both under their own steam.

And I found myself in the position of encouraging them to play a computer game instead of the usual monitoring of time, content, and noise level. The on line flight simulator game does not come with the biff, bang, wallop special effects standard in most computer games these days. It is almost sound-free although you can introduce your own sound effects if you want. The special effects are really special but totally natural, not human mediated. And yet they were fully engaged.

(Click here to see the on line flight simulator game that captivated my children.)

It was a moment of revelation for me. Heretofore I had only used the on line flight simulator for my own enjoyment. Because it was my game the children assumed it would be too boring for them. I had too. But now here they were engaged in areas I could only have hoped to interest them in before this.

And then my mind moved on to the other aspects of the on line flight simulator that are inherently educational, although I had not looked at it like that before. You can fly to over 20,000 airports worldwide. Just knowing where they are is a geographical accomplishment. The scenery is photo-realistic thanks to developments in computer graphics so you get to see the great natural features of the world and visit any exotic place you can think of.

Developments in animation mean that the astronomy is precise and reactive – you see the heavens moving as you fly around the earth. My on line flight simulator game also has realistic lighting features, both beacons and take off/landing lights, which are critical in terms of aerodynamics. My children would possibly move into these areas as well.

For a moment I felt I had found the holy grail of education. Here they were getting interested in many of the areas I would wish them to but discovering it on their own, which is always the most effective way. It was a benefit of my on line flight simulator that I had never dreamed of but was delighted by.

Engineering vehicles are heavy-duty vehicles, specially designed for executing construction (Civil engineering) tasks, most frequently, ones involving earth moving. They are also known as construction equipment, earth movers, heavy equipment or just plain equipment. They usually comprise five equipment systems: implement, traction, structure, power train, control and information . Through the mechanical advantage of a simple machine, the ratio between input force applied and force exerted is multiplied. Currently most equipment use hydraulics as a primary source of transferring power. The use of heavy equipment has a long history. Vitruvius a 1st century B.C. engineer gives detailed descriptions of Roman heavy equipment and Roman cranes in his treatise De Architectura.

Online Engineering Bachelor Degree

The following paragraphs summarize the work of degree experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of degree. Heed their advice to avoid any degree surprises.

Engineering Basics: By definition, Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to the economical solution of practical technical problems. The work of an engineer deals with the relationship of scientific discovery and its application to the world around us. Engineers design and develop and improve many things we use.

In addition to design and development, many engineers work in testing, manufacturing or repairs. They supervise production in factories, determine the causes of breakdowns, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. People who work in engineering do all kinds of jobs.

Some people work in design, which is generally done on computers, and others actually make things in a more hands on environment. Another job segment to the engineering field is the people who make business decisions and deals or who do research ingenious new ways of designing and building things.

Devry University offers bachelor engineering degrees online in the areas of biomedical, computer software, mechanical engineering and more!

People who work in engineering do all kinds of jobs. The majority of engineers concentrate in a specific area such as structural and transportation engineering, which is part of civil engineering and materials engineering.

Engineers also may specialize in one industry, such as aerospace, computer, or medical. The following are more in-depth explanations of various engineering disciplines:

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest of all disciplines. Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices.

They work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing.

If a machine has moving parts that work together to produce power – it’s likely that a mechanical engineer designed it. They also design tools used by engineers in other specialties and work in emerging fields like nanotechnology.

Mechanical engineers may work in production operations in manufacturing or agriculture, maintenance, or technical sales; many are administrators or managers.

It has been said that mechanical engineering is where the power is.

Civil engineers work in the public interest on projects that impact public health and safety. Some specialize in environmental engineering, focusing on protecting the water supply, or finding safer ways to process human and chemical waste.

Others specialize in construction, or in designing roads, bridges, airports and urban transit systems. Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems.

Theses engineers have to take in to account many factors in their design process. They are responsible for calculating construction costs, expected lifetime of a project, government regulations and potential environmental hazards to their projects such as earthquakes.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and includes many specialties. The chief specialties are structural, water resources, construction, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering.

Many civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer.

Biomedical engineers develop mechanisms and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems by using knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering principles and practices.

Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, to develop and evaluate systems and products such as artificial organs, prostheses, pharmaceuticals and medical information systems.

Most engineers in this specialty need a sound background in another engineering specialty, such as mechanical or electronics engineering, in addition to specialized biomedical training.

Some specialties within biomedical engineering include biomaterials, biomechanics, medical imaging, rehabilitation engineering, and orthopedic engineering.

The more authentic information about degree you know, the more likely people are to consider you a degree expert. Read on for even more degree facts that you can share.

Work Environment

Engineering professionals work in various settings such as office buildings, laboratories, or industrial plants. Some may also work outdoors at construction sites and oil and gas exploration sites. Some engineers travel extensively to plants or worksites. Engineers work a standard 40-hour week, but longer hours can be expected to meet deadlines.

Education Requirements

A bachelors degree is the minimum requirement for entry-level engineering jobs.

Most engineering degrees are granted in electrical, electronics, mechanical, or civil engineering. Many programs also include courses in general engineering. A design course, sometimes accompanied by a computer or laboratory class or both, is part of the curriculum of most programs.

If you think a career in engineering is what you are looking for, compare our online engineering schools to find a program that is right for you.

There’s no doubt that the topic of degree can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about degree, you may find what you’re looking for in the next article.
