LMS 8F 8624 First Run 25/4/09

25th April 2009 was the first time since 1965 the LMS 8F, number 8624, run under own steam. This was the culmination of 28 years hard work by a dedicated band of volunteers that make up the 48624 Society. Resuced from Barry Scrap Yard in South Wales the locomotive first went to the original Peak Rail base at Buxton before moving to Darley Dale in 1991. The vast majority of the restoration has been undertaken outside with only the final few months of work being undertaken inside. This video records the momentus day when she finally came to life again.

Gerald Finzi – Cello Concerto Op. 40 I (First Movement) – Allegro Moderato

“The last phase of Finzi’s output following the 2nd World War saw a series of larger scale works culminating in the completion of the Cello Concerto, the work which dominated his final year and was first broadcast on the night before his death in 1956. Barbirolli championed the concerto actively, with the Cheltenham premiere being followed by a Royal Festival Hall and a Prom performance, which at any other time in Finzi’s life would have signalled a major breakthrough. In the years since the composer’s death, the work has become increasingly admired and performed as one of Finzi’s most eloquent and richly inventive scores. The solo writing for cello, whilst remaining in a traditional orbit, is the most virtuosic of any of his works, with a growing list of solo interpreters, headed by Raphael Wallfisch.” – Boosey & Hawkes repertoire notes. I took these photographs in London (Palace of Westminster and Horseguards); Lancaster County PA USA (the Amishmen with horses; the boy with dog; and the steam locomotive at Strasburg) and of various places in the Derbyshire Peak District, England. The final slides of the water avens and apples aren’t mine. I find Tim Hugh’s performance throughout this entire concerto compelling – Tim understands Finzi’s idiom and digs deep into it. As does Howard Griffiths and the Northern Sinfonia. For more videos and other information about the Peak District please visit Let’s Stay Peak District at Tim Hugh – Cello
