German steam locomotives 01 1066 and 41 018 on 2.5% Schiefe Ebene grade, 1st run

Rebuilt in the 1950s by the German Federal Railway (DB), 01 1066 and 41 018 are among the most modern and successful German steam locomotives. Both are equipped with oil burners. Whilst express train locomotive 01 1066 is a 3 cylinder 4-6-2 Pacific cleared for 140 km/h (87 mph), fast freight engine 41 018 is a 2 cylinder 2-8-2 Mikado cleared for 90 km/h (56 mph). On October 21, 2006 at 2:10h pm and 4:48h pm the two engines battled gravity with 12 coaches in tow on the famous 2.5 percent Schiefe Ebene grade (Neuenmarkt – Marktschorgast) North of the town of Bayreuth not far from the German-Czech border. Both runs were recorded from different perspectives at the reverse curves near to kilometer post 80 – this video shows the 2:10h pm run. The tour was organized by IGE Bahntouristik, www.bahntouristik.de See and hear the tremendous effort of the two engines, ejecting their exhaust perpendicularly from the stack, clouds of white steam passing off the open cylinder cocks, and their steady, booming, thunderous voices echoing through the mountains. Watch the big 3 cylinder Pacific steadily blasting up grade through the reverse curves followed by the coaches and listen to the 2 cylinder beat of 41 018 shoving with everything she’s got. Long before they appeared and for minutes after they had passed by, the forest reverberated with the sound of the engines. Enjoy! © T. Sohns, Germany

Route of the 20th Century Limited featuring classic NYC streamlined steam locomotives

The 20th Century Limited was an express passenger train operated by the New York Central Railroad from 1902 to 1967. The train travelled between Grand Central Terminal in New York City and LaSalle Street Station in Chicago, Illinois along the railroad’s famed “Water Level Route”. The NYC inaugurated this train as direct competition to the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broadway Limited, both lines intended for upper class as well as business travellers between the two cities. Making few station stops along the way and utilizing track pans along the route to take water at speed, the train completed the 960.7 miles (1546 km) journey in 16 hours, departing New York City westbound at 6:00 PM Eastern Time and arriving at Chicago’s LaSalle St. Station the following morning at 9:00 AM Central Time., averaging 60 miles per hour (97 km/h). This collection of clips shows The 20th Century Limited in it’s heyday being hauled by classic NYC streamlined steam locomotives including the famous Hudson’s.
