Students of today are very conscious about the decision of choosing a subject for their higher studies. The selection for which, mainly depends on the score card achieved at senior secondary examinations. Students are always asked to perform well in their 12th board examinations, because these are the exams, which decide the future of the students. The future career fields are very much dependent on these exams. Also, the choice of sciences or medical in the higher studies or at graduation level depends on the fact that what subject one had in his senior secondary examination. In the field of sciences, it is basically divided into medical and non- medical fields. Engineering is a field which corresponds to the non medical field of sciences.

A student wanting to pursue his career in engineering can opt for any of the following engineering types:

v     Chemical engineering

v     Civil engineering

v     Mechanical engineering

v     Electrical engineering

v     Engineering management

v     Geotechnical engineering

v     Engineering sciences

Out of all these engineering types, the most popular and the broadest engineering discipline is Mechanical Engineering. Students who have opted for the career in mechanical engineering are made to deal with the designing and execution part of all the machinery and mechanical tools present in the industry. Students aiming for career in mechanical engineering, need to have, BE/ B Tech degree in their graduation or post graduation in Mechanical Engineering. The graduation course for mechanical engineering is of four years, and in case of polytechnic diploma courses, the duration is of 2-3 years. Students with physics, chemistry, and maths as their subjects in 12th examinations are eligible for opting graduation courses in mechanical engineering.

For selection in mechanical engineering courses, a student needs to have some minimum percentile, which depends on the admission criterion of the colleges and the institutions. All the colleges providing courses for mechanical engineering conducts entrance examinations. Some of the entrance examinations for engineering courses are:

v     All India Engineering Entrance Examination

v     IIT Joint Entrance Exam

v     All India Common Entrance Test

v     Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

v     Delhi Combined Entrance Test

v     SRM Engineering Entrance Exam

v     Birla Institute of Technology and Science Examination

v     National Institute of Technology

v     Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination

v     Engineering Common Entrance Test for Diploma Holders

Some of the duties which a mechanical engineering student has to perform, after pursuing his studies are, designing, constructing, developing, maintaining, producing, installing, functioning and mechanism of large steam engines, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, jet engines, tools of different machinery, etc. Mechanical engineers are also said to be the driving force of the mechanical industry, it’s because of them only, the development and production of all the IT advancements is possible.

All those students aiming for career in mechanical engineering must check themselves on the following points, before applying for admission in these courses:

v     Great designing and drawing skills to draw the structures for machines

v     Should be able to conceptualise the plan with his design and analytical skills

v     Must possess great mathematical solving ability, with match being the most important tool of engineering

v     Should have an inquisitive approach to dig into the depth of matters and solve the problems successfully

v     Should have a sense of organising things and must be able to work with all kinds of people in all types of environment. Should be a team worker, creative and must be able to present his innovative ideas to the world.

Students wanting to pursue, teaching career for mechanical engineering mostly opt for higher or post graduation degrees in this field. Or, if the student aims for managerial positions, then an additional degree in the management would help him in grabbing the opportunities for management levels.

Jobs in Mechanical Engineering

Have you found your knack yet? I think all of us want to find that slot in life that we just seem to fit perfectly into. Now I’m not just talking about the spouse and family aspect, but also about the career side. Do you know what you would love to do for a living? This is a question that is often more difficult than easy to answer. Okay, not counting becoming a socialite, who just shops all day like Paris Hilton. If you had to pick one job to do for the next 40 years, what would it be? Well, I can give you examples of a few rewarding ones. How about careers in medicine, law, or possibly teaching? Then there are plenty of jobs in mechanical engineering.

Engineering Jobs

As a mechanical engineers, you can also be in charge of the design of tools which will be used by other engineers in their work. Among all the engineering specialization, mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. Indeed mechanical engineers are not restrained to one particular position in companies or to any sector possibly working in production operations in manufacturing or agriculture, maintenance, or technical sales. Many mechanical engineers even work as administrators or managers.

Mechanical engineers will work mainly on power-producing machines including electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. But they can also work on other power-using machines including refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing.

Mechanical Engineering Education

If a mechanical engineering education is in your future then you can expect to gain a wealth of training and knowledge from your trade school of choice. Since most entry-level engineering occupations require a formal education, a Bachelor Degree in mechanical engineering would be most desirable, but an Associate Degree would be adequate for some jobs.

Students applying for entry to mechanical engineering schools will need a solid background in math, science, English and other humanities.

To offer public services, a mechanical engineer must not only have a thorough mechanical engineering education, but must also acquire licensure. All 50 states require engineers who offer services to the public to maintain a license.

Being skilled in a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical work can be a big advantage to any individual especially in these uncertain times. While some people possessing non-mechanical skills may not be fortunate to hang on to their present jobs or may be unlucky to get employed today, those with electrical and mechanical skills have a good chance of keeping a regular job and getting higher wages owing to the vital function they serve in major industries.

Overview of Mechanical Engineering PE Exam and HVAC and Refrigeration Study Tips

The professional engineering license is one of the most important steps in an engineer’s career.  It allows the individual to legally practice engineering in the state of licensure.  This credential can also help the engineer to obtain higher compensation and provide the first step in developing a credible reputation.  But in order to obtain this license, the engineer must first meet the qualifications as required by the state of wanted licensure, including working a minimum amount of years under a registered professional engineer.  These engineers must serve as references on the application.  The state licensing board for the exact amount of years and references required should be contacted.  The engineer must also have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.  Finally, the engineer must pass the Professional Engineering or PE Exam in his or her discipline.

The Mechanical PE Exam consists of an AM or breadth portion (4 hours) which covers HVAC and refrigeration; Mechanical Systems and Materials; and Thermal and Fluids Systems.  The PM or depth portion (4 hours) covers the engineers specialty.

HVAC & Refrigeration Study Tips

The first step in studying for the HVAC & Refrigeration afternoon module of the mechanical PE exam is to obtain the appropriate references.  These references are the most commonly used references by a working HVAC & Refrigeration engineer.  For some these may be old college textbooks and for others they may be just the working code books.  I recommend the following references:  ASHRAE Fundamentals, ASHRAE HVAC Systems AND Equipment, ASHRAE HVAC Applications and ASHRAE Refrigeration, a Mechanical Reference Manual, appropriate ASHRAE codes (62, 90.1, 15, etc.) and NFPA 90A.  Working professional engineers will most likely have more than these references, but for the PE exam I feel these are the minimum references.

The second step is to obtain the necessary minimum skills and knowledge of a professional engineer.  The hardest part of this step is determining these minimum skills.  One way to accomplish this is to think like the test-creator.  If I were a test-creator what would I qualify as the minimum skills of a professional engineer and what can I test?  I feel that these requirements all lead back to the fundamentals of engineering in practice.  The term “In practice” excludes the science behind the actual skill and focuses on the actual doing and solving of a problem.  The best way to explain the difference between a skill and the science behind it, is with examples:

Navigating a refrigeration diagram and using it to find the capacity of a chiller operating at certain parameters, not explaining the theory behind the diagram.

Navigating a psychrometric chart and using it to solve air mixture problems, not explaining the theory behind the creation of the chart.

Navigating the steam tables and using it to solve for the amount of super heat, not explaining the equations used to create the tables.

Knowing your references.  Several problems may be as simple as finding the appropriate reference and looking up the solution.  In the practice of engineering, many problems are solved by researching the applicable code or a reputable reference.
