Reading & Northern: Steam to Jim Thorpe

Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter! twitter.com On Saturday June 21st, 2008, the R&N ran the first-ever steam-powered revenue passenger train in almost 12 years. Here, we’ll see G-1 Pacific #425 (with SD50 #5049) leading the excursion train to Jim Thorpe and Return. Believe your eyes and ears, because this footage is unbelieveable. Special Thanks to the R&N crews for making this possible.

Reading & Northern #425 – Railfan Special

On October 25th, 2008, 425 hauled a group of railfans along the R&N’s system from Port Clinton to as far as White Haven, stopping for photo runbys along the way. The weather was wet, cold, and miserable, but it made for many interesting scenes of steam working hard in the rain. Also note the whistle #425 is wearing in this video – the Boston and Maine 6-chime steptop. This is the whistle #425wore during the Grand Opening at Steamtown in 1995. Personally I love it’s mournful undertones more than any other whistle I’ve heard on the engine so far. — Special Thanks to the folks at the Reading & Northern for running this trip (Tyler Glass, Steve Gilbert) www.readingnorthern.com Thanks to Christopher and Andrew Blaszczyk for navigation.

Reading & Northern #425: Autumn Steam Spectacular

Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter! twitter.com On Saturday October 9th, and Sunday October 17th, Penn Rail Videos was on the scene to capture R&N #425 on excursions to Jim Thorpe and return. We have video from both visits combined into one. We have more video from our October 17th video, which features a Santa Fe 6 Chime on the 425. On October 9th, the engine will adore a Southern Pacific 5 Chime whistle; that of which the Chinese 5 chime whistles are duplicated from. With many familiar locations shown throughout this video, you will be thrilled by the sights and sounds of steam locomotion, courtesy of Reading & Northern #425.

Reading & Northern: Steamin’ on the Lehigh Line

Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter! twitter.com For the first time since in about 40 years, a steam locomotive will grace the rails of Tunkhannock, PA. The engine having this honor is none other than reciently-restored steam engine #425, a classy ex-GM&N 4-6-2 Pacific-type locomotive. We’ll watch the historic event unfold as the engine storms out of Riverside Park in Tunkhannock, as she heads south towards Pittston Yard. Once clear of Pittston, the engine will begin to tackle the west side of the hill going towards Penobscot; the highest point on the RBMN Lehigh Line. Once past the hill, the train will cruise on down through the famous Lehigh Gorge, and arriving in Jim Thorpe. After a 3+ hour layover in the ‘Switzerland of America’, the train heads back through the gorge, this time tackling the east side (and steeper side) of the grade going towards Pittston. We’ll see the train at famous locations such as Tannery, Soloman’s Gap, Laurel Run, and even in the Lehigh Gorge! So sit back, and witness this historic event as steam once again, traverses the Lehigh Line.

Reading & Northern 425: Steam Through the Fall Foliage

On Sunday, October 18th, 2009, the Reading & Northern Railroad ran a steam-powered excursion between Port Clinton and Jim Thorpe, so passengers could experience the fall foliage in Carbon & Schuylkill counties. The foliage was indeed spectacular, and the crew of #425 put on an awesome as we follow along trackside. This video includes a few shots from Port Cinton to Jim Thorpe, turning on the turntable in Jim Thorpe, and a final scene as the train head back towards Port Clinton. Full-length feature video is now on sale! Visit www.pennrailvideos.com for information.
