Exbury Steam Railway 2011

A short video, taken on Monday 11th July 2011 showing the Exbury Steam Railway at Exbury Gardens in the New Forest in Hampshire. The Railway follows a one and a quarter mile circular route on a 12 ¼” gauge and is a wonderful and evocative way to see the gardens. The sights and sounds of the liveried blue engines are a draw for visitors of all ages. After leaving Exbury Central Station, the train enters the Summer Lane Garden with a bridge, tunnel, causeway and series of individual themed gardens based on character and texture. The collection of plants reflect the seasons and can only be seen from the train. Children will enjoy spotting a number of woodland moss animals, including deer, rabbits, a squirrel, fox and frog, together with contemporary metal sculptures. Passing out of the Summer Lane Garden, the train travels on through a wooded area, revealing glimpses of the Rock Garden. A steep gradient leads to a curving timber viaduct, with fine views over the Wildlife Ponds. The train then passes a Plant Nursery and a Pumpkin / Exotic Fruit Patch and on to a second lake, home to “Hump-phrey, The Lake Moss Monster.” Close by is a Sunflower Field, at its peak in summer, before the train loops around the oldest tree in the Gardens, the Domesday Yew. Exbury North Halt in the American Garden, so called because it contains rhododendron hybrids from the USA, enables visitors to hop off the train and explore this area before returning to Exbury Central on foot or by train. A Wonderful Day Out With Thomas at the Gwili Railway Carmarthenshire 24/04/2011

In this video we start at the special station at Cwmdwyfran, which has been erected especially for this event which runs over the Easter period. We hear a brief introduction from Peter Nicholas the Chairman of the Gwili and the Fat Controller. We then see Thomas arriving with the first train of the day to Llwyfan Cerrig where a heavily edited selection of the wonderful events and facilities that the staff have put on to entertain the visitors of all ages. It was a delight to see the amazement on the faces of the children attending when Thomas and friends arrived, this coupled with the hilarious antics of Rob the Driver, The Fat Controller, and the Cleaner made for a very enjoyable day out. I hope you enjoy this different approach to a Thomas event at the Gwili

Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) – Steam loco

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a World Heritage Railway. It is one of the very few remaining steam operated railways in the world. Opened to traffic on June 15,1899, this 46 km. meter gauge (1000 mm) track is the steepest hill railway in India; and the only one of its kind with a rack-and-pinion traction, operating on a gradient of 1 in 12.50 ie 1 foot ascent/descent for every 12.50 feet of travel. The X Class engines with wheel arrangement 0-8-2T, were built between 1914 and 1949 at the Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works (SLM), WInterthur. Few of these are still in active service on this line. Three of the vintage coal-fired engines have now been successfully converted to oil-firing at the Indian Railways workshop at Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli. Seen in this video is the coal-fired steam engine #X-37392 chugging uphill toward Coonoor, en route to Ooty, with the passengers from the Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilagiri Express. VMGovind Krishnan’s book: “NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion”, documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.

LITTLEWOOD, British N Gauge Model Railway

This is footage taken of our Modern Image ‘N’ Gauge Model Railway ‘Littlewood’ at a Model Railway Exhibition near Wolverhampton. The layout was exhibited all around the UK between 1996 and 2007, attending over 50 shows. The track plan comprises a double track mainline which passes through three levels; on the middle level it is joined by two slow lines, making a quadruple section. The lower level mainline is equipped with overhead catenary for electric services. A disused branch line from the upper level has been taken over by a preservation society, who are in the process of restoring it for steam and diesel operation. The station has been renovated for use as a base for passenger services and locomotive restoration and a limited shuttle service is operating over part of the line. The movement of trains is fully automated using magnets, reed switches and relays. The layout was sold in 2007 and a full description is available at welcome.to
