Lego “Steam” Engine, Single Acting Engine Working on Air

This is a simple, functional steam engine built entirely with Lego’s. The parts used come mostly from an “Expert Builder” Technic series kit. The engine is single acting, and is very weak. The fit between the piston and “cylinder” is very loose, and leaky. The valve looks like a slide “D” valve, but is actually a balanced piston valve.

Single pipe steam heating system, what does the top and bottom values on the water level gauge do?

Are they supposed to be closed or open? I am assuming closed because on some sites that I read they say you need to open them once a month but they were open and I had to add water to the system almost daily when it is colder. This is my first winter in this house so I am clueless about steam heating systems.

I came home to a flooded kitchen floor because water was coming out of the vent vapor value on the raditator. I have read this site http://www.cool-info.co.uk/brines_steam/steam_heating/stm_heating.html which has a lot of good info but still unsure of the values.

Also the switch that controls the air/steam/water pressure, how do you figure what that should be set at?
